LETTER: Will Dems be held hostage by radical few?

Editor, Register-Mail: Sen. Schumer and the Democrats lucked out with the failure for their Voting Rights Act proposals. After all, the majority of people across all racial and ethnic groups favor requiring voter identification to vote. Even in the bluest of blue states, New York, 58% of the voting public favors mandatory IDs to vote. If voter I.D laws and absentee ballot rules are undemocratic, then all of Europe and virtually all developed countries in the world are undemocratic. All 44 European countries, except parts of the United Kingdom, require government issued photo IDs to vote and 74% of them entirely ban absentee voting for those who reside domestically.

Europe found unverified voters, unrestricted absentee voting and ballot harvesting create both opportunities and vehicles for voter fraud. Thus they have taken the above steps to provide voting transparency and confidence in the results.

So the canard that voter ID is an act of voter suppression targeting minority groups no longer passes muster. Maybe the Democratic Party will begin to address the serious concerns of the public, including their own base, excluding, of course, the far left of their base.

Now they can address the border crisis, inflation, the continuing supply chain bottlenecks, the serious increase in violent crime along with deteriorating respect for life and property. They do this and they should have a better chance at the polls in 2022 and 2024. Will they be wise enough to change course or will they continue to be held hostage by the radical few on their far left? We shall soon see. — Dick Conklin, Galesburg
