LETTER: You don't have to be a Christian to be good person

Editor, Register-Mail: Thomas Mosher, your letter of Aug. in the Register-Mail contained your usual glaring errors: Was America founded on “Christian values?” Perhaps, but I certainly was, having lots of compassion, empathy, loyalty, integrity, honesty … Thomas, I'm a sweetheart of a guy. But I don't think America was ever a “Christian nation.”

And it isn't that, now. What Hill Republican has ever promoted Christianity? What Hill Republican has ever ACTED AS A CHRISTIAN? Those SCOTUS Justices who ruled for more poverty-sticken mothers and children, and more social services, meaning higher taxes? Those are situations that we really, REALLY don’t need.

I just now listened to President Biden’s EXCELLENT “Soul of America” speech. A much-needed message from a great man. I believe he's a true Christian. But you plainly don't have to be a Christian to be a good person. You don't seem to understand that, Thomas.

You have good things to say about pro-Trump, anti-democracy evangelical Christians. But recently, I've been listening to a lot of debates and interviews with Christopher Hitchens on YouTube. He said that historians, including Israeli scholars, point out that Moses was never "found in the bulrushes," and that there was no "wandering in the desert," among many other Biblical fallacies.

And thankfully, Donald Trump has never seriously claimed to be a Christian. That's good, because he is a narcissistic sociopath who did America so much harm. As usual, your deity did nothing about that. Nor is he, she, or it doing anything about this disastrous climate change, which could bring a horrible end to our civilization.

And Harry Bulkeley, quite plainly the FBI raided Mar-a-Lago because that agency and the Department of Justice have tried, in various ways, including subpoenas, to get those documents back for many months now. Many of them TOP SECRET. I suppose President Biden was notified about the raid. And certainly, this is furtherance of an ongoing criminal investigation! And the Select Committee found that “Russiagate” is NO HOAX.

Side note: Democrats are feeling good, these days about November 8, while Republicans …

Finally, Trump’s attorneys have lied to the FBI and the DOJ. The Oathkeeper’s attorney is in Jan. 6 trouble. On MSNBC, former U.S. Deputy Attorney Andrew Wiessmann told Alex Wagner: “MAGA can also mean Making Attorneys Get Attorneys.” — Jerry Ryberg, Galesburg
