Bloomington native Oran W. Eagleson (1910-97) is among the distinguished graduates of Indiana University. Working his way through school during the economic depression, he received his IU bachelor’s and master’s diplomas before completing his doctorate in psychology in 1935.

Obtaining an academic position in Atlanta the following year, his career at Spelman College spanned over 40 years as a teacher, researcher, and administrator. Eagleson was honored in 1970 as the inaugural Fuller E. Callaway Professor for his teaching and scholarship. Continuing to teach and consult after his retirement in 1980, he was awarded an IU honorary doctor of science degree at the 1985 commencement in Bloomington.

Among the first Black scholars to earn a Ph.D. in American psychology, Eagleson went on to an outstanding career in higher education.
