Letter to the editor: Book dispute could have been teachable moment

I am writing in regards to the family that was offended at some of the wording in the Huck Finn book.

All of us get offended and will continue to get offended throughout life. It is inevitable, so we must learn how to handle the offenses.

It is easy to understand why they were offended by that certain language used in Huck Finn. But I respectfully disagree with the way it was handled by the family and the school.

I wish that all of us could get such fast results when offended.

I question why the book was read aloud. And I wonder if the students were informed in advance about what they would encounter. It could have been used as an opportunity to compare the past culture with the present culture.

Let us learn from history and not try to erase it.Ted Knapp, New Philadelphia
