Letter to the editor: Emilia Sykes will protect Ohio’s seniors

We’ve all heard the term “Elections have Consequences.” Well, they do. That’s why I am voting for Emilia Sykes for the 13th Congressional District and encourage everyone else to do the same.

Social Security and Medicare are on the ballot this November. Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wisconsin) suggested that funding for Social Security and Medicare should be discretionary, not mandatory, and lawmakers would have to approve the spending on these two great programs each year.

Other Republicans have said that Social Security and Medicare should be privatized which, by the way, they have been successful by starting to privatize Medicare with private Medicare Advantage Plans. They want to turn our hard-earned money over to their friends and donors on Wall Street. What a disaster that would be.

You can be sure that Emilia’s opponent will do whatever the Republican Party leadership tells her to do because she is beholden to them and has no ideas or track record to talk about. Just follow the money and see who has donated and endorsed her campaign.

If you are a senior, like me, and receiving Social Security and Medicare, this will be the most important vote that you will probably ever cast.

Emilia Sykes has a long record of serving her community. She is committed to protecting Ohio’s seniors by ensuring that retirees who have worked all their lives can access the benefits they’ve earned through Social Security. She will fight to lower prescription drug prices and expand Medicare to cover vision, dental and hearing services.
