Letter to the editor: The Freedom Caucus keeps up the Big Lie
Who is free under Freedom Caucus?
The so-called Freedom Caucus of the U.S. House needs to be called out for what it is: a collection of radical right-wing representatives who are a sham and fraud. Organized in 2015 by Jim Jordan, Mark Meadows, and Ron DeSantis, three of its stated goals are: protecting the rule of law; ensuring accountability in government and society; and protecting the safety of citizens. The about 40 current members include liars such as Marjorie Taylor Greene, Scott Perry, Matt Gaetz and Jordan.
The “freedom” assertion would be laughable except that these members of Congress are a direct threat to our democracy. Their and Donald Trump’s pernicious lies about voter fraud were and are being used to derail the legitimate election of Joe Biden (rule of law?). These members are now referring to the Jan 6 rioters and insurrectionists as political prisoners and patriots (accountability?). “The Big Lie” and the selfish cry of freedom from wearing masks (safety?) have endangered our lives and made a significant contribution to over 840,000 COVID deaths. Whitewashing the attempted overthrow of our democracy on Jan. 6 continues to threaten us. It emboldens extremist groups and average citizens to threaten violence and commit violent acts (safety?).
The Freedom Caucus will stop at nothing to regain power in the House and Senate. Witness the restrictions on voting rights in Republican-controlled state legislatures, all justified by the Big Lie. If you are in favor of an authoritarian government, then follow the path of Trump and the Freedom Caucus. If you prefer living in a democracy, then reject their lies and the danger to our safety, the rule of law and accountability in government. Support the truth and vote for candidates that call out the Big Lie.
