Letter to the editor: Thomas West will lead Canton in the right direction

"Go West, young man," is a phrase attributed to Horace Greely, who favored westward expansion. Greely was founder and editor of the New York Tribune. The phrase came to symbolize people willing to take a new direction and work hard to succeed.

Thomas West, candidate for mayor, has accomplished much in the last 20 years, and is widely admired and respected by Canton’s community.

West is willing to work hard to enhance the future of Canton by taking a new direction to build and strengthen our community. By investing in people, providing support and services within our government departments, building a community that guarantees a better future. As mayor, his top priority is families and neighborhoods, our greatest resource.

West, as a social worker, obtained funding and provided programs to support physical and mental health services for the underserved. He facilitated social services resources from birth to old age, Medicare-Medicaid.

West went west on Cleveland Avenue to city council chambers, where he served as 2nd Ward councilman for 13 years. West supported public safety by securing funds for the police and fire departments.

West heeded the call and went southwest to Columbus, where he served as the 49th District representative. On the state level, he never forgot Canton. He has always been concerned for improving streets and alleys. Broadband internet was made available to the city of Canton. He assisted in securing funds to support small and minority-owned businesses to recover from economic loss as a result of the pandemic.

Thomas West, a man of vision and experience. His knowledge of city, state, and local government fosters his desire to unify, build up, clean up and move Canton forward.
