Letter to the editor: Vote William V. Sherer II to be Canton's mayor

Canton is fortunate to have four good candidates vying for mayor in the Democratic primary. Thomas West, Bill Smuckler, and Willis Gordon have all demonstrated their commitment to the people of Canton, but I believe that William V. Sherer II is best suited to provide the leadership essential to Canton’s continued renewal.

Canton has made great progress in recent years, but much still needs to be done. Mr. Sherer has outlined a number of programs to continue Canton’s “rebirth,” four of which are particularly appealing:

  • Economic development: Through collaboration with Canton’s business community, he will expand community re-investment areas to attract good-paying jobs and he will actively support existing small businesses.

  • Safety: He pledges continuing support for the Canton Police Department, ensuring adequate staffing and resources, enhanced police training, and diversity. He will build trust and relationships in the neighborhoods by expanding foot patrols, community policing, and community engagement.

  • Infrastructure and neighborhood renovation: He pledges new investments in the neighborhoods, with paving, infrastructure, and housing renovation. He will directly involve homeowners with building and repair projects and expand programs that provide monetary assistance.

  • Attracting young people to Canton: He pledges economic development strategies and incentives for existing businesses to provide good jobs and affordable housing. Close cooperation with the schools and utilization of “our direct pipeline” to the building trades to get our kids into high-paying jobs straight out of high school. Full support in the development of a strong arts community and of attractive community events and activities.

As business manager for the Ironworkers union and as City Council president, he has demonstrated the skills and commitment to lead Canton’s journey to a better tomorrow. I urge Canton’s Democrats to vote for William V. Sherer II for mayor on May 2.

John A. Cihon, North Canton
