Letter to the editor: Vote for William V. Sherer II for Canton mayor

As union members, we always aspired to have fellow union members run for public office.

The labor movement is the everyday working example of representative democracy. We practice every day what we want our greater public governments to do and be. With the ongoing debate about how our government works and for whom, labor leaders have the practical experience of what it takes to get movement on critical issues such as safety and economic improvement for all.

In Canton, the eighth-largest city in Ohio, we have just that opportunity to elect a union member and leader to the highest office in the city – mayor! William V. Sherer II is a member of Ironworkers Local Union 550, and he currently serves as business manager/financial secretary/treasurer. I have known Bill, his father and grandfather, also fellow union Ironworkers and officers, for many, many years as a fellow tradesman and personal friend. I am honored to endorse William V. Sherer II for mayor of Canton.

Bill currently serves as Canton City Council president.

Here is a partial listing of public boards Bill has served on: Greater Stark County United Way Board of Directors; Stark County Urban League Board of Directors; J. Babe Stearn Community Center; Advisory Committee for the Canton City Schools; and the City of Canton Income Tax Review Board.

I ask anyone who reads this letter and knows someone who lives in the city of Canton to please ask them to vote for William V. Sherer II for mayor.

Daniel J. Fonte, Canton
