Letter: Excellent forum held for Montgomery candidates

On August 10, One Montgomery with strong participation by the League of Women Voters of Montgomery, Faith in Action Alabama (Montgomery Hub), and the Metro-Montgomery County NAACP conducted a candidates forum. It was hosted by WSFA 12 News and took place at the Alabama Department of Archives and History.

The four candidates for mayor were incumbent Steven Reed and challengers Victorrus Felder, Barrett Gilbreath, and Marcus McNeal. Twenty candidates representing seven of the nine council districts joined the well-attended three-hour forum, which was broadcast on WSFA’s website and social media channels. Videos are available on WSFA.com, YouTube, and Facebook.

The candidates addressed several matters of interest to voters, including reopening community centers, supporting charitable organizations, increasing investment in law enforcement, enhancing the relationship between police officers and children, and improving the performance of our schools.

The vibrant public support for this event bodes well for an informed citizenry, as Montgomery confronts its future challenges.

Our current efforts are consistent with the atmosphere within One Montgomery, which was founded following the 1983 Todd Road Incident to embrace diversity as a much-needed component of our society.

One Montgomery seeks to promote trust and understanding among people of various racial, ethnic, and religious backgrounds through discussion, education, and enhanced social interaction.

The group meets for breakfast the first Tuesday of each month and assembles via zoom on alternate Tuesdays. We welcome new members.
