LETTER: The 'forever' war, political parties and the planet
Real journalism requires training and a resolute search for accuracy, unlike today’s versions of the old saying, ”Don’t confuse me with the facts – my mind’s made up.”
For example, a reader recently resented the phrase “breaking eggs to make an omelet” in describing our final exit from the “forever” war, adding that the military genius in the White House probably wanted a good photo op for 9/11. He clearly prefers FOX and Heritage brands of pronouncements to mainstream media slaves of the “Democrat” party. Sadly, pretty much a mainstream Panhandle viewpoint.
Meanwhile his party remains virtually under the thumb of an established liar and egotist, whose banner still flops down the side of a McMansion over at Seaside. It’s the one of our only two parties seemingly intent on dismantling, or even destroying, the very government they’re sworn to uphold and protect!
Our own congressman reflects the coarse hostility birthed in the Gingrich and Tea Party era. Remember the crude and abrasiveness treatment heaped on our first Black President? Broken eggs, no omelet.
Even after stealing “Populism” from their opponents, Republicans remain the same outfit that fought bitterly with one of their own tooth and nail. Fortunately, FDR had a Democratic congress and passed many protections and relief programs enjoyed by workers to this day, while the GOP’s saint, Reagan, presented us with “trickle down” economics. A system peddled by such as Milton Friedman’s Chicago school of economics. A shell game promoted many years by then Fed chair Allen Greenspan, a devout disciple of Ayn Rand. Yet hardly original. The aristocracy and crowned heads of Europe employed trickle down principles for centuries. We’re still stuck with it!
Finally, regarding a recent meeting reflecting the deep concerns of the almost 200 nations in attendance. The biggest egg of all! Our planet, with all its creatures and our human family. A primary egg breaker remains the party of “business as usual” that constantly downplays climate, COVID and many social catastrophes in the making. Still no omelet, but without humanity and a healthier planet there will be none!
