The one-year anniversary of the Jan. 6, 2021, failed coup at our nation's Capitol went unrecognized by almost half of our elected officials. That includes Congressman Matt Gaetz and Sens. Rick Scott and Marco Rubio.

Believers of the “Big Lie” of a stolen election trashed the Capitol building and threatened to hang Vice President Mike Pence and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Thankfully, the traumatized legislative officials were able to pull it together and certify the election of 2020. Our democracy was salvaged, if only for now.

Initially, there was great condemnation from both parties. Now Republicans, with a few exceptions, are unwilling to even acknowledge the treasonous act, much less punish its perpetrators. How can that be?

All the people involved in the Jan. 6 insurrection need to be held accountable. Let's start with the man who created the Big Lie, who incited the mob and watched for over three hours while the People's House was desecrated, people were terrorized, and Capitol Police officers were brutally assaulted (and killed). I guess Blue Lives didn't matter on Jan. 6.

Not holding those responsible for this treasonous act only invites more of same. Lock them up!
