Letter: Let's look after, respect and take care of each other regardless of race, gender

Letter to the editor

Of course, all lives matter. That's why we're out on the square. No lives can really matter until ALL lives REALLY DO matter.

The current subterfuge to malign us for advocating justice for those who are Black is diatribe against the BLM website — which isn't us. This goading is silly, as if I were to accuse friends who sincerely espouse pro-life as being promoters of breakfast cereal.

Even if you prefer white lives matter, there is important work. Stand up for Wooster's homeless — mostly white — whom our city wants to eliminate by criminalizing them, and, those who try to help.

I showed up in early June 2020 because our very white grandkid was born within 1.5 miles of George Floyd's murder. I want dignity and opportunity for him, which has integrity only if I demand respect and privilege for others.

My parents and Sunday school teachers inculcated that to extol the life and teachings of Jesus, but not strive to live accordingly, is hypocrisy.

My mom, in particular, walked the talk. She took on anti-Jewish and anti-Catholic. Advocated for native people — our ancestors go back to Plymouth colony. Urged rights for ALL women. As a hospital pharmacist, helped Cuban refugee floor-sweepers learn English.

She taught that integrity entails risk.

It's up to us to look after each other. To work for dignity, respect, safety of all.

Jay Klemme, Wooster
