Letter: Palm Beach theater demolition a 'catastrophe' to those who cared about it

I just read about the catastrophe that has befallen the Palm Beach Playhouse. It sounds suspiciously like the same "deal" in which someone bought a mansion and presented the somnolent council with a convoluted demolition and reconstruction plan that was supposed to preserve the landmarked structure on South Ocean and, as soon as he got approval, had the bulldozers in and razed the place before the council could review what they agreed to and identify the flaws therein. From the published picture, I see no hope of reconstructing the building as a playhouse, which plays neatly into the developers' hands.

If this is the case, then it is a scandal and a huge slap in the face to Patrick Henry Flynn, Simon Taylor, the late Dina Merrill, Arlene Dahl, Sally Anne Howes, Skira Watson, Janet Gordon, Paul and Paulette Noble, and those others who put blood, sweat and tears into the preservation of the playhouse as a town treasure.

Having been active in the effort to preserve the playhouse it is of particular interest to me and should be to the rest of the town residents.David G. KammPalm Beach
