Letter: Tired of the status quo on critical issues? Then time to elect new reps

Letter to the editor

As Benjamin Franklin was leaving Independence Hall, having helped write the Constitution of the new United States, he was asked by a woman in the crowd, "Mr. Franklin, what have we ... a monarchy or a republic?"

To which Franklin replied, "A republic ... if you can keep it!"

Midterm elections are fast approaching. If you approve of the manner in which our current elected officials, both in the governor's office and the state legislature, have dealt with certain issues — guns and gun violence; safe, legal and timely access to reproductive care; adequate funding for public schools; citizen mandated and court ordered redistricting; the First Energy bribery scandal — then continue to vote the same individuals into office.

However, if you do NOT approve, perhaps it is time for a change in governance, both in the governor's office and in our local state representative.

When elected officials feel they are untouchable, refusing even to debate issues important to all Ohioans, their behavior can become authoritarian and autocratic.
