Life starts at conception

Many recent articles have been about “a woman’s right to choose.” The statement is incomplete. It should say, “a woman’s right to choose murder.”

Murder has always been an immoral evil from the time that Cain killed his brother Abel, and certainly after Moses gave the set of commandments. Morality is not a democratic process. Wrong is wrong, if everyone is wrong. And right is right, if nobody is right. Morality is inherent in the human makeup, not something to be decided on a whim or by a popular vote.

If life starts at the moment of conception, then abortion is murder at any point. All scientific knowledge indicates that life starts at the moment of conception. Common sense, backed by ultrasound images, show that after a sperm penetrates an egg a life process begins. If life does not start at conception, then show some other logical place where it does. There is no other reasonable point when a life starts other than at conception. Viability outside the womb, and a detectable heartbeat, have been somewhat successful “red herrings” to distract from when a human life does actually start. But the fact remains that there must be a point when abortion is murder by stopping a developing human life.

So, if a popular vote legalizes abortion, or a court says it is not able to figure out when life starts (i.e., Roe v. Wade), abortion is still immoral and murder when it stops a developing human life. There is no other possibility.

A move against Democrats

On Nov. 8, in a fair election, three Democrats were elected to serve on the Ohio Board of Education, giving them a majority on the board. In a naked grab for power, Republicans in Columbus are seeking to overturn the will of the voters. They are proposing to strip the board of its authority and transfer its power to decide how our children are educated to the governor.

It’s odd that the Republicans showed no interest in this arrogant seizure of the board’s responsibilities until the results of the election became known. Now a vote is expected before the end of the year on this bill. No wonder Ohio has a reputation for being one of the most corrupt states in the nation.

Action needed to help immigrants

We are experiencing labor shortages that are impacting our economy. Dreamers may have come here as immigrant children but they have grown up as Americans and they "belong" here. They work here, are part of their families here. Pass legislation to protect Dreamers now.

Choices in 'colorblind' society

Congratulations! You and your identical twin are the top two candidates for the position of vice president of your company. You are white and your identical twin is black.

If the Supreme Court uses the rationale of a colorblind society in order to eliminate affirmative action, we will be left with nothing but the subtle and more insidious white privilege.
