Letters: Another horrific mass shooting. Time for action, not words

May 24, 2022: Another horrific, horrific mass shooting killing innocent people, children no less. "This has to stop" — instead of people in power saying this in news briefs, i.e. the president of the United States, all other politicians and law enforcement need to take the necessary steps and procedures to make it stop!

We all know it has to stop. May all religions pray to their gods, or who they worship, to help us all.

ND out of its depth

This is not a letter about how good the University of Notre Dame was in the 1980s when we were students there. This is a letter about a university, its president and its leadership, who are “dépassé par les évènements,” meaning out of one’s depth, overwhelmed and outmoded.

The Buffalo shooter’s citation of Professor John Gaski’s “research” and the university’s pitiful response are but the latest example of an institutional vanity that leaves Notre Dame unable to think clearly and respond appropriately to the challenge of our time: a growing number of people who hate others for who they are, and act out on this hatred. Another candlelight vigil at the Grotto will not work this time.

The university must take full responsibility for the murky moral neighborhood in which it has been living. Its leadership must meet the challenges of the world in which we live or step aside.

Paying respect

I wanted to give everyone a heads-up about a great Memorial Day Concert. I look forward to this concert every year. It's always patriotic, giving much-needed respect to our military, past and present. The personal stories always touch your heart and make you proud of your country. In this era of political correctness it isn't always fashionable to be a patriot, but if you call yourself American don't miss this concert.

I promise it won't disappoint. It's on the local PBS station, WNIT, on Sunday at 8 p.m.
