Paul Steury, Democratic candidate for Congress, doesn’t have the huge campaign war chest of his Republican opponent. Unlike his opponent, he’s not beholden to large corporate donors. He didn't duck out of Tuesday's Second District debate, as did his GOP opponent.

Steury’s campaign slogan, “Paul for All,” says it all. He supports strong public education, an economy to benefit everyone, health care for all, and a woman’s right to choose. Steury is committed to renewable energy and a healthy environment.

His opponent has wrapped himself in the mantle of the late Rep. Jackie Walorski. He hopes voters will forget that Walorski, while personally charming and gracious, refused to hold town meetings after her first year in office, voted for a government shutdown and worked to overturn the 2020 election.

Steury will listen, even to those who disagree with him. His opponent has declared himself an avid Trump supporter, even in the face of the former president’s lawlessness.

Please vote for science teacher and environmentalist Paul Steury, who will represent the people of northern Indiana and not just the moneyed elite.

Wise words

For the upcoming midterm election, irrational voters who continue to espouse the former administration's "Big Lie" should consider the wisdom of a Republican commentator to wit: "Nothing can be learned from the second kick of a mule."

Gun violence

What is the biggest issue in South Bend today? As a high school student, I would say that it's gun violence. On Sept. 22, a juvenile was was charged with unlawful carrying of a handgun after the school staff searched the student's backpack and allegedly found a handgun at Washington High School.

The gun violence that is happening in our city causes students as well as the community stress and concern. A law should be made that if people want to carry a firearm, they have to undergo firearm safety training and get a license. If we do not have a law on firearms, gun violence will only increase, causing more tragedy for our community. Schools need to teach students about gun violence and what to do if there was someone in the school holding a firearm. It would make the students and community feel safer in our city.
