Letters to the Editor

Thank you Holland, for a great Election Day

My sincere thanks are extended to the Holland voters who voted in Ward Five this past Tuesday, Nov. 8. Your civil and courteous behavior brought calm to a very busy day at the polls. As an election (Poll Inspector actually) worker, I can't begin to tell you how many times voters thanked me for my service to the election.

Voter participation was up and the day proved busy but not unmanageable. Voters were patient and thoughtful throughout the day. Lines were typically pretty short as the staff all worked together toward a pleasant and customer driven day.

While all results may not have pleased the faithful in Holland, I am confident this fine community will move on responsibly and continue to care and respect each other in their day to day lives.

Let's get serious about honoring veterans

Once again, our nation will recognize those of us who served our country in armed forces by shutting down federal offices, state offices, our banks and our mail delivery. Words can’t express what an honor this is. Really, they can’t.

Quality Car Wash and a few other local businesses have taken tribute to veterans to a higher level, but on the whole, the day seems more of an insult than an expression of appreciation.

I’d suggest that if we really want to honor veterans in a meaningful way, we turn Election Day into a national holiday instead. That’d be a tribute worthy of a great nation. Just sayin ...

Well done! We know how to do elections right

As a non-partisan political challenger assigned to the Ward 6 (precincts 14 and 15) polling station (at First Reformed Church), I observed democracy at its best on Nov. 8. Amidst all the hate and lies that are circulating among many in our country, Tuesday’s voting procedure was an uplifting reminder that the process of democracy is still sacred.

This individual right that identifies our country, takes a dedicated team of professionals that is neither Republican nor Democratic.

A big thank you to Holland’s Clerk and her team for a job well done. Thank you to all the workers I observed for hours, each giving his or her best. Each voter was greeted with the utmost respect and support. And thank you to all the voters, who came out in droves to exercise their power to vote, a right that must never be taken for granted.

An ode to Election Day finally being over

The election is over.

The results are known.

The will of the people

Has clearly been shown.

Let's forget all our quarrels

And show by our deeds

We will give our new leaders

All the help that they need.

So let's all get together

And let bitterness pass

I'll hug your elephant,

And you ...
