Letters to the editor: Columnist's love of nature shows in his work

Pete Waters' writings on earth's beauty comes at the right time

To the editor:

Kudos to nature-loving Dargan boy Pete Waters for channeling his inner Henry David Thoreau ("The beauty of the earth can be found in so many places if one only pauses to look around," July 31) at a time when the foundations of our natural world are threatened as never before in modern human history.

Instead of running First Amendment in print, try the Fifth

To the editor:

Not sure what the point of printing the First Amendment on page 2 of the Aug. 20 edition of the paper. Yes, we have freedom of speech, but it does not extend to yelling "fire" in a crowded theater or saying a lie enough times that people believe it and attempt to overthrow the government based on this lie. How about printing the Fifth Amendment dealing with people answering for a crime when indicted by a grand jury? We have a former president indicted by four separate grand juries. I think that speaks for itself.

Writer says columnist's 'scoffing' of Jesus foretold in the Bible

To the editor:

How wise is it for a condemned criminal to mock, deride and ridicule the judge before whom he will appear for sentencing? Such a man is a fool at best, and is labeled a "scoffer" in the Book of Life (the Bible) in 2 Peter 3:3-4: “… scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own sinful desires … saying 'Where is the promise of his coming?'” The Herald-Mail columnist’s writings of Aug. 15 (Tim Rowland, "Hotline to Heaven: ChatBOT lets you text with impersonations of Jesus, Abraham, others") deriding him who will be the final judge, was the ultimate display of foolishness. And, to think that this same Jesus was willing to give his life as a ransom to make eternal salvation available to every man. Best you get to know him as your savior, before he becomes your judge.
