Letters to the editor: Development and the drought; abortion and 'sanctuary'

No water, no construction

A Ventura County Star article on April 28 states that “millions must cut water use.” However, no articles mentioning severe drought ever mentioned the obvious antidote to this life-altering problem. That is the massive new home development projects, i.e., Wells, Telegraph and Blackburn roads. In Camarillo at the Springville area, another huge development. Downtown Ventura off San Jon Road, a huge apartment complex above beaches. Plus, all the infills everywhere. Just to name a few in this area.

Existing residents are going to have to ration and rearrange our lives because of thousands of new water hookups and users. Severe rationing is just ahead of us. It’s going to be rough on our way of life and expensive.

New home development projects always seem to outpace water construction projects, if any. Here’s a thought, provide reliable water supplies before breaking ground.

In a Star article on May 11, it reads “amid drought water usage up dramatically.” Possibly new home construction or people just trying to live normally but exasperated with all the requests to conserve water while new construction is going on all around them.

Another Star article: “Ventura agrees to lease its state water supply to Riverside County water wholesaler.” It’s time, long overdue, for Ventura to finish our pipeline connection to state water. According to this article, Ventura County pays up to $1.5 million annually for the rights to state water since the early 1970s. Do the math. We don’t need rights, we need water.

There’s no sanctuary for abortion

The recent Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade has resulted in discussions about so-called “sanctuary” cities and even states for abortion rights. The recent vote by the Oxnard City Council to declare Oxnard a “sanctuary” city for abortion is but one example of this. However, this term is a contradiction at best and outright lie at worst.

Remember, every single abortion results in the deliberate death of a distinct, living, human being, which, while very small, is no less human. This preborn child has his or her own DNA, organs, and nervous system and, as such, cannot be considered part of the mother’s body. To claim otherwise is to show a very poor understanding of human biology. The notion that the right to kill this preborn child (again, that’s what abortion is) should be offered “sanctuary” status is absolutely absurd. There is no safety for the preborn child at all, and as such, no such place where abortion is allowed can ever be described as a sanctuary.
