Letters to the editor: Extra fee for Ohio hybrid drivers; genital checks; school shootings

Hybrid driver experiences inflated price

A week or so ago I went to renew my license plate sticker. Because my car is hybrid, I was required to pay a $100 fee. The BMV worker told me that this was because my car gets better mileage and therefore does not pay as much in gas tax as someone who drives a nonhybrid vehicle. Using less gasoline and being more environmentally responsible were why I bought a hybrid.

One could argue that those driving nonhybrids, which are arguably harmful to the environment, should pay more for their vehicle registrations while folks driving hybrids should pay less. That seems especially so because I live in a county that requires E-Check due to air quality concerns.

I think there is a reasonable solution. If Ohio needs more revenue, the burden should be spread evenly to all vehicle owners regardless of the type of engine being used. Getting the needed revenue by adding the $100 fee to hybrids strikes me as unreasonable.

Ohio lawmakers draw up foolish bills, again

During the 10 years I was a member of the Ohio General Assembly, substantive issues were addressed. Today, there is more offensive foolishness than substance. See “Transgender athlete bill may require genital checks,” (June 8). How about adding an amendment requiring quarterly genital checks of legislators? The public deserves to know the gender of its representatives. Perhaps, also include a check for LGBTQ fear and hatred.

Why nothing is done about slaughter

Nothing or little is done about school shootings because we, the people, elect politicians who are more concerned about hanging on to power than tackling the long-term solutions to the underlying causes of the massacres of our young. Perhaps we could elect someone else who will forget about being reelected and devote time and effort to change.
