Letters to editor: Galleglys disrespected by CLU; misinformation about Teslas

CLU must restore Gallegly Center

I am writing as a longtime colleague and friend to former Representative Elton Gallegly and his wife, Janice. I was an original member of the California Lutheran University’s, Elton and Janice Gallegly Center for Public Service and Civic Engagement’s Advisory Board from its inception. I have had a front-row seat to the abhorrent and disrespectful manner the Galleglys and their center have been mistreated.

As a brief history, the Galleglys accepted the invitation of California Lutheran University’s former president, Chris Kimball, to establish the center, build from the ground up a facility to house his archives and install an exact replica of his offices in Washington, D.C., as outlined in a 2013 contract. This was followed by the 2018 ribbon cutting. Most importantly, the Gallegly Center provided 14 Gallegly Fellowships for a Master of Public Service. Of note, nine of the recipients are Latinas and three are white females. Thus, an overwhelming majority of the recipients are Hispanic and female.

As a Hispanic woman, I am terribly proud that these women were given an opportunity to pursue a graduate degree at CLU through a nonpartisan center that was emphatic about keeping politics out of education. My graduate school education was fully financed through federal student loans. I only wish that I could have availed myself of such a leg up. My graduate degrees are in psychology.

It is unfathomable and unconscionable that not only has the center been dismantled without the consent of the Galleglys but that his archives, our history, has been removed and not digitized per the original agreement. We are being denied access to Representative Gallegly’s work as a public servant, who is the longest-serving congressional representative in Ventura County history. This madness needs to stop now, and the agreement needs to be honored immediately.

Focus on credible information

Re: Ron Van Dyck’s July 25 letter, “Government needs collaboration”:

Mr. Van Dyck makes a lot of unsubstantiated claims in his statements. First of all, Teslas do not emit more CO2 than a gas car. Cobalt used in batteries is used in every cell phone and laptop. Tesla is committed to ethically generated sources. Yes, batteries are recycled. Gas cars also use oil-generated plastic and tires as well. Teslas generate zero emissions. Not very healthy breathing exhaust from cars and trucks driving by.

Where does electricity come from? All mine comes from the solar panels on my roof. Tesla superchargers have solar panels at their supercharger stops. Teslas are 21st century. Gas cars are 20th century. We have evolved beyond the noise and exhaust of gas cars. Power plants will be expanded in the future, as have water sources. Desalinization plants are the future for water sources. More demand means more development. Remember when the 101 freeway was only two lanes? It has expanded as demand grew.

We need to focus on credible scientific information and sources, not monetary driven claims.
