Sep. 18—Stacey Goldfarb: Macon Cowles: Shocked by statement

I have never been as astonished and outright angry as I was after reading the Sept. 16 article on CU South and Macon Cowles's statement. Especially from the lawyer who fought the battle against the Exon Valdez oil spill and sat on our City Council. Don't attorneys take an oath to uphold our constitutional rights?

I don't know when he went to the "dark side" but he's not the same person I knew for years. He almost sounds like a Trumper. I am talking about his statement that basically strips voters of their democratic right to vote and be heard. He had the audacity to actually say, having the voters weigh in "is not good democracy."

Well, Macon, I hate to have to remind you that democracy is "for the people by the people." And the majority of voters decide what is in the best interest of the city. Your statement was actually scary, as you have turned your back on the Bill of Rights and desecrated our Democratic rights.

I'm very disturbed by your statement, as everyone should be. Put on your MAGA hat and see how far it gets you in Boulder or anywhere. I don't know what happened to you, but you've gone off the rails. To the rest of Boulderites keep up the petitions and hold the City Council responsible for representing the wishes of the citizens of Boulder.

Donna Werner: BVSD recall: Science or wishful thinking?

Boulder Valley School Board members are being threatened by a recall that would cost the district $750,000 for following the science. The potential recall grounds are that the board "demonstrated a disregard for students' physical and mental health by mandating masks and promoting the use of vaccines."

Ironically, the headline article in Friday's Camera debunks this. The science evidence quoted says "there is no scientific evidence showing masks cause harm to kids' health, despite baseless claims suggesting otherwise."

And the second headline article today is entitled "Outbreaks at Schools" highlighting local school outbreaks of COVID.

The BVSD school board is appropriately acting on the guidelines and recommendations from the state and county public health offices.

My kids are going with the science. What about yours? Decline To Sign this wasteful petition. Let's use the money to teach science in our schools!

Julie Kreutzer: Masks: Saved by the Boulder bubble

I read Sam Gates' Sept. 16 anti-mask letter with great interest.

It's an enormous relief to know that the Boulder Bubble and our vaccination rate will protect us from the highly contagious Delta.

I had been worried about the increase in breakthrough infections and our County going from moderate to high and the new cases in our schools. But it is All Fine. In fact, there's a petition to recall Boulder School Board members for taking COVID precautions so it must be. Let's not let the doom and gloom people drag us down with their talk of Colorado rates of COVID going up since we dwell in our bubble and we have our superior knowledge to protect us.

This is due to the fact that the Delta virus replication of vast amounts of germs is quite mindless. Meanwhile, our citizenry is pretty smoking hot on Google and in the commonsense department. It's very hard to compete with that, Dr. Fauci and meddling Boulder Health experts! In fact, it's time to throw a large party to celebrate our vanquishing of the virus, since we are the first community in the nation to have done so. I respectfully suggest we should celebrate like the athletic community we are by one by one, ascending the 3rd Flatiron, burning a mask and then race down to Chautauqua for a mass rally with bonfires and drinking, followed by drunken rental scooter races to the Pearl Street Mall.

We owe it to the rest of the country to demonstrate how the healthy and clever citizens of Boulder deal with pesky pandemics and "experts" far less clever than we are. The laws of health and science have never and will never apply to us! Let's pick a date and... Onwards!

Matt Poling: CU Buffs: A profane student section

The University of Colorado Boulder football team should be commended for its disciplined performance in a hard fought game Sept. 11. The Colorado student section? Not so much.

Having lived in Colorado previously and traveled to dozens of college football destinations since, I don't think I've encountered a more profane and disrespectful group of young people anywhere else, or in prior seasons here. I don't know how much of this was due to the pregame THC, and how much was from the cups of $9 beer cascading down their section at game's end. A Colorado alumnus suggested it's because they were mostly parented in California. True or not, any potential employer who witnessed such behavior would be compelled to look elsewhere for hires.

We won't be making a return trip, but we will always remember them when we hear some politician proposing America's workers pay off these young scholar's student loan debts.
