Symphony sharp as ever

As our lives begin to get back to some degree of normalcy, I am reminded how rich this community is when all sectors are open and operational. This is particularly true of the performing arts. For nearly 20 months, we were deprived of so much, including the opportunity to experience the joy and power of live music.

The Eugene Symphony has opened its regular season, and the experience has been exhilarating. After a long hiatus, the orchestra has played magnificently, the programs have been brilliant, and the audience has been so appreciative. The Hult Center staff has adopted the appropriate safety protocols, including required mask-wearing and proof of vaccination or negative COVID-19 test, which have been reassuring to concert attendees.

As the season progresses, I hope more people will begin to venture out and support the arts, which are so vital to the health and well-being of this community. November is a month to give thanks, and I am grateful for our community’s amazing artists and musicians who contribute so much to our quality of life. Please support them and the organizations that bring us together for shared experiences.

Deb Carver, Eugene, board president, Eugene Symphony Association

Thank you, Joe Biden

I woke up this morning with such a feeling of relief and positivity. Feelings I haven't had for a long while. I was so relieved to see President Biden and the Democrats being able to accomplish what they set out to do for the American people.

I was so tired of the constant lies and backstabbing and attempted power grabs by the Republicans and was getting disillusioned with our democracy and the damage that has been done to it.

Thank you, Mr. President, thank you Democrats for saving our democracy, for working for the people.

There is still hard work to do, but at least we have people who are willing and able to do that hard work for U.S.

God Bless America and our democracy.

Marion Sproul, Eugene

Joe Biden is laughable

In reading Mr. Al Esterling's letter on Joe Biden I nearly fell. over. I would like to remind him this president has a 38% approval rating, and it keeps going down. I am proud to admit I am one of the 62% who do not approve. Just listening to him speak is enough to show he is not saying anything to heal or unite this country. We have never been more divided.

Rising inflation, high gas prices, open border where we are letting who know what cross, his mismanaged exit from Afghanistan, just to mention a few. Now he wants to push through another huge spending bill that is a pathway to socialism.

If all this is heading toward healing, you sure have me fooled.

Gordon Waske, Eugene
