Letters to the editor: Read something else if you don't like Tim Rowland

If you don't like a columnist, there are other things to read

To the editor:

In response to the comment by Dennis Wick dealing with Tim Rowland's column (Letters to the editor, July 30), there are other articles you can read in The Herald-Mail if you find his work offensive. I've read his column for decades and enjoy his topics because of the variety of the content.

You can easily solve the problem by skipping his articles and reading those of Pete Waters, who gives a different spin with his interesting topics. And I don't know where you get your statistics, but you don't give much credit to Americans — all of us know something about something!

Capitol, Metro police lost battles, but saved the republic

To the editor:

A look back, about 950 days after the insurrection, at what the Capitol Police and the Metropolitan Police accomplished reveals that although they lost the battles, the time they provided to the members of Congress to reach safety was invaluable.

On Jan. 6, 2021, about 12:53 p.m., the Capitol Police lost their first line on west side of the building. About 1 p.m., House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called the joint session of Congress to order. About 2:15 p.m., Vice President Mike Pence is evacuated to his first secure location, and Sen. Chuck Grassley gavels the Senate to recess.About 2:29 p.m. the House recesses. About 2:49 p.m., House members in the upper gallery are finally evacuated.

The battles fought by the greatly outnumbered Capitol Police and Metropolitan Police provided at least 116 minutes for the members of Congress to reach safety. If these battles were not fought, the outcome would have been very different.

All patriotic citizens owe a debt of gratitude to these law enforcement officers — they lost the battles but they saved the republic.
