Letters to the Editor: Support Selvey for state representative

Support Selvey to clean house in Columbus

It has been described as the largest political scandal in Ohio history, and it remains a problem. A recent $49 million settlement in a class action lawsuit against FirstEnergy will reimburse customers of Toledo Edison, Ohio Edison, and Cleveland Electric for excessive customer charges imposed by Ohio House Bill 6. Unfortunately, the law has not been fully repealed and continues to cost consumers millions of dollars in subsidies for two coal-fueled power plants, one in Indiana.

HB 6 was passed as a result of a bribery and money laundering scandal that resulted in the arrest of Ohio House Speaker Larry Householder (R) and four of his associates. They were accused of secretly taking $61 million from FirstEnergy and using it for personal enrichment, political gain and to influence votes for HB 6. In exchange, HB 6 was to provide a $1.3 billion taxpayer bailout of FirstEnergy. Two Householder associates have pleaded guilty to racketeering, FirstEnergy has admitted to conspiring with public officials, and the former Public Utilities Commission of Ohio chairman, whose company received a $4.3 million payment from FirstEnergy just before he was appointed by Gov. DeWine, resigned after his apartment was raided by FBI agents.

The ongoing HB 6 scandal is an embarrassment, and it continues to cost Ohio consumers. It is time to clean house in Ohio and support candidates who will enact legislation that puts consumers first, not big corporations. I invite others to join me in supporting Diane Selvey (D) for State Representative, who will do just that.

District needs Selvey as its state representative

In these turbulent, divisive times, we need an Ohio Statehouse Representative who has the ability to listen to constituents and seek solutions by finding common ground. We need a common sense moderate rather than the extremist legislator currently in office who introduces and supports bills such as House Bill 99, HB 455, HB 325, SB 215 which are opposed by those most closely impacted, teachers and police, or bills with such simple verbiage and punitive elements that tie the hands of medical professionals and counselors who have taken pledges to do no harm and to respect the privacy of their clients (HB 704, HB 454, HB 151.)  Most importantly, we need the first woman representative for the 88th district. We need Dianne Selvey.

Selvey was born and raised in Sandusky County, worked 37 years at Whirlpool, and graduated with a business degree from Heidelberg College.  She acknowledges “saying it like it is” and “asking a lot of questions” while forming her views, especially on issues with which she is unfamiliar. She will follow the facts. “I’m not an expert on everything,” but she will listen to the experts.

She respects educators and trusts their curricular decisions. She supports schools, not vouchers. She is against the Divisive Concepts Bill (HB 616, HB 327) which restricts teachers’ ability to teach the truth and is the basis of the dangerous threat of book banning.

Dianne Selvey will represent the 88th with integrity and common sense. Vote for a hometown girl who really cares about her community.
