'Justice is not of us but of God and God's grace'

To the editor:

The past several years have been difficult ones for both Democrats and Republicans as the philosophical impurities and hypocrisies of both parties have surfaced dramatically — to the consternation of all.

It is in the nature of politics for people to have strong opinions and to speak as though they had a firm understanding of where various decisions are leading us. However, as the events of recent weeks and months have shown us, we (as the philosopher Plato said) are not wise because we cannot foresee the future. Without God's help, all of us are time's fools.

In his "Republic," the great Greek philosopher observed that men would rather appear to be just than actually to be just.

There is a lesson there for all of us, I think, when we conclude that so many of us who say we seek justice really are seeking revenge and vindication of our cultural and political grievances. The world is still, as it always has been, a dangerous place — and we should tread carefully as we walk through the dark forest of domestic politics and our ideas of what is true and just.

Justice requires courage and patience, both of which appear to be in very short supply at times in this our maddening and tragic human predicament. Tragedy is our default setting. Justice is not of us but of God and God's grace.
