Letters: Ousted Kevin McCarthy has a lot in common with Charlie Brown

TOPSHOT - US Republican Representative from California Kevin McCarthy walks from the House Chamber after he was ousted as Speaker at the US Capitol in Washington, DC, on October 3, 2023. McCarthy was axed from his role as speaker of the US House of Representatives Tuesday in a ruthless overthrow by far-right Republican lawmakers furious over his cooperation with Democrats. For the first time in its 234-year history, the House backed a resolution "to vacate the office of the speaker" with a 216-210 vote setting the stage for an unprecedented contest to replace McCarthy a year before the presidential election. Don't call him Dr. Faustus

Kevin Mcarthy is a modern-day Dr. Faustus.

First, he sold his honesty when he back peddled on his original comments about Donald Trump being responsible for the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.

Rex Huppke: McCarthy booted from House speaker, Trump gagged. The Republican Party is an unserious mess.

Then he sold his integrity and moral compass to a few far-right wing members of Congress so that he could become speaker of the House with the provison that the right wing could have a chokehold on his actions as speaker.

History will record that his ambition to be speaker and lack of integrity to gain the position will label him as a pathetic example of a politician who cares nothing about his country but only fulfilling his own ambitions.

Dr. Faustus would be appalled since McCarthy achieved neither power nor success.

A career made for "Peanuts"

I've come to believe that Kevin McCarthy is Charlie's brother, think about it!

And now you call for term limits?

Oct. 1 letter, "Term limits are the answers," was interesting in that it used a fact, "the recent indictment of New Jersey Sen. Robert Menendez," to lead to a total untruth, that "the facts (regarding influence selling) are becoming more and more evident in the Biden family investigation."

Michael bridges fact and fabrication by stating that the Menendez indictment "demonstrates how corrupt our political system has become."

Really- that indictment, one that caused leaders in his party to call for his resignation, is what most clearly exemplifies political corruption?

Not a President inciting an insurrection?

Not Supreme Court Justices on the take?

Not Ohio Republicans still in bed with big energy after their speaker was found guilty of corruption?

Not Republicans taking NRA money to stifle responsible gun safety legislation that the large majority of voters support while gun deaths become the leading cause of youth deaths?

As for term limits, let's first make sure that we have gerrymander-free districts, that voting is encouraged and made easier, not stifled, and that the most vetted presidential election in the history of our country is honored by all.

Ohio excels at football and gerrymandering

Re Yes vote on map was sadly only option,” Sept. 30: Thank you to the Dispatch for Rep. Allison Russo’s clear explanation of how Republican rule in Ohio works.

Readers who didn’t see it should check it out online.

It lays out how—once again—Republicans on what pretends to be a “redistricting commission” gamed the process through delay, obstruction, and the arrogance of brute power to ignore Ohio voters who have twice voted for representative legislative districts.

We are justifiably proud our football team and enjoy the annual theater of refusing to say the name of “that team up north.”

But Ohioans can’t ignore that those voters up north, through a voter-initiated referendum, banned current and former politicians from sitting on a redistricting commission. As a result, Michigan’s state government now looks and votes in ways representative of all the state’s citizens.

Ohio routinely ranks among the top 10 football teams in the nation.

It’s also among the 10 most gerrymandered states, depriving voters of the victories that would represent Ohio’s political reality. We can change this. You can find more information at citizensnotpoliticians.org.
