Letters: Paper made politics of a tragedy

Paper made politics of a tragedy

I find it very upsetting this newspaper finds it necessary to use this tragedy of these killings in Texas and make it a opportunity to put down the GOP. Your letters to the editor make no mention that the killer was a person that gave no reason for his actions at the time and it took over an hour before anything was done. But you just blamed the Republicans. If the police had acted, as they should have most of these children and teachers would be alive. Shame on you for making this a political thing.

GOP needs to step up on gun safety

I read an article recently that said 90% of Americans  agree we should have reasonable gun safety laws. That must include a whole bunch of Republicans.  Those Republicans need to step up and let their representatives knows that doing nothing in response to mass shootings is not acceptable. This has got to stop. Shopping for groceries or going to school should not be a life threatening experience. According to a 2018 Swiss study known as the Small Arms Survey, the U.S. has 5% of the world's population and 45% of its guns. That is bad enough but with no gun safety laws, it's ridiculous.

A national cemetery for school gun victims

I’ve never lost a child. We have lost grandchildren to cancer and drug overdose but never to gun violence. Each time (there's news of another mass shooting,) my heart breaks. So, what do we do to make sure this never happens again?

Well, I have some suggestions. We must establish a national cemetery for our "little heroes." We must award the families full benefits to include death benefits for funerals, lost earnings, full health benefits for the immediate families and stipends for the natural life expectancy of these ‘soldiers’ lost in battle and we need to award Purple Hearts to all survivors and establish a national holiday for these ‘soldiers’ who gave the "ultimate" sacrifice. If our children must take part in "active shooter" drills, then they must be honored as war heroes. Maybe the politicians, war mongers, gun enthusiasts, bigots and haters among us will take notice. Nothing else has worked.

Ban assault weapons

At a recent night service, my Rabbi asked a most important question: “When will people love their children more than they love their guns?” I have been haunted by these words. I don’t think this is the time for the Senate to just pass a bill requiring registration of guns. We need an absolute ban on all assault weapons. It really is the time to put politicians' feet to the fire.
