Pro-choice rhetoric over the top

The over-the-top rhetoric from abortion supporters is stunning. No, those of us who are pro-life do not believe that women are nothing but machines to spit out babies, or that babies are nothing more than commodities to be picked up by families who want to adopt one.

But neither do we view women as though they are animals who act only on their immediate instincts and therefore need access to abortion when the result of acting on those immediate instincts is an “unwanted pregnancy.”

Women (and men) are human beings with intellects and the ability to evaluate their actions in terms of consequences, so that they can make intelligent decisions before they put themselves in a position where they believe they must destroy a human life.

Free markets make gasoline pricey

Who do you think made gas and diesel so expensive? Joe Biden? Vladimir Putin? Nope, guess again. It was the oil companies. The cost of crude isn’t at record highs. But the oil companies are charging a fortune, and raking in the profits.

How can the oil companies do that — legally? Simple — we have designed a system called “free enterprise.” Basically, it allows free rein to increase prices, pay workers less, and pretty much do anything else to make money.

But any time someone tries to enact controlling legislation, the radical right shouts “no fair…this is America.” It’s all the Democrats’ fault, right? OK, radical right. Have it your way. Leave the oil companies to their money-gathering. Let "Greedom" ring.

Why stop at victims of communism?

Re Gov. DeSantis' latest publicity event ordering that all Florida students study about the "victims of communism:" Many think this was another publicity stunt in favor of his far right-wing base, this time the immigrant Cuban community in Miami. To prove his detractors wrong, I think DeSantis should not stop with these victims. There are lots of victims in our history for our students to learn about.

How about mandating the teaching of the victims of segregation and the Jim Crow laws? These victims, mostly black, were lynched and denied equal opportunity to vote and be represented, denied equal education, rental housing and home mortgages through red-lining and a myriad of other discriminatory acts. Teaching about these victims could take an entire school year.

How about teaching about the victims of the federal Indian Boarding School policy? Recently, it was disclosed that the forced relocation of Indian children to white-run church or government boarding schools resulted in over 500 child deaths in America. How about eaching about the gay victims at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando in 2016 and the continued harassment of gays to this day?

Jews are victims of antisemitism even today and Asian-Americans have been the target of hate speech and physical harassment in this country since Donald Trump yelled that COVID-19 was "the Chinese virus." C'mon, governor. Let's not stop with communism.
