School board member's comment spot on

I would like to send this note in support of Dr. Debra Robinson. Dr. Robinson has been and continues to be one of the most thoughtful, caring school board members for years now. The anger she expressed regarding the shooting of Romen Phelps was totally justified. Another unarmed black man shot, should upset everyone. A young man who was confused and sought refuge at the place that meant most to him and, who was clearly unarmed, is a tragedy. Bravo Dr. Robinson. I give you a standing ovation.

Good news needs decent leaders

Re  letter to the editor, "Give us some good news:" the writer is right on target. Most readers would certainly prefer more lighthearted news than we currently read in our newspapers. Yet, every day seems like an uphill battle to ensure American democracy survives. And so, our daily news is not lighthearted.

To help preserve our democracy, we must put a stop to mass murders, continued gun violence, elected officials ignoring subpoenas, elected officials ignoring the deaths of children slaughtered by military assault rifles, elected officials taking money from the National Rifle Association, elected officials perpetuating the Big Lie, elected representatives acting like buffoons.

As citizens, our job is to elect officials who have morals, hearts and brains. To ensure more lighthearted news, we must take action and vote out of office those who accept money from the NRA, promotes the "Big Lie," or offers "thoughts and prayers" yet does nothing of substance to help reduce the proliferation of guns. To save our democracy, I implore you to vote.

Church decree troubling

I see that the Archbishop of San Francisco has decreed that Nancy Pelosi is not permitted to receive communion because of her view on abortion. So much for separation of church and state, huh?

America's unique in gun violence

While our state and federal governments are not the most corrupt in the industrialized world, our citizens still suffer in many ways due to the tsunami of cash washing over our elected officials. The U.S. is the only country on the planet that experiences mass shootings on a more than an occasional basis and can't seem to do anything about it.

We are also the only country on Earth with a Republican Party and a National Rifle Association. In 2016 the NRA spent nearly half a billion dollars on Republican candidates. This Memorial Day weekend the NRA celebrated its long standing partnership with Republicans to block gun control measures. From Columbine to Uvalde, Republicans have decided that having school children killed is an acceptable price to stay in power.
