Letters: Tim Ryan offered nothing new. Car thefts are about bad parenting

Dems lose by staying 'old-school'

I could not possibly have been less surprised that J.D. Vance won. I emailed every single Democrat county chair on Morgan Harper’s behalf and those who replied all told me Tim Ryan was a sure winner.

Ryan offered absolutely nothing new, especially to those under 40-45.

He boasted of voting "with Trump" on trade - with Trump.

Zero appeal to young people, especially women.

Thomas Suddes: Ohio Democrats doing Republicans ‘big favor’ by barely playing defense

Democrats in Ohio keep doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result - that is pure, political insanity.

U.S. Senate Democratic candidates Morgan Harper, left, and Rep. Tim Ryan shake hands at the end of Ohio's U.S. Senate Democratic Primary Debate at Central State University in March.

Morgan Harper might well have lost to Vance, although l wonder. But at least her nomination would have shown upcoming generations that there is a party that realizes that they matter.

Democrats are losers if they stay old-school.

It all goes back to the maps

Why Ohioans are not united around the most unfair maps in the country is beyond me. It’s outright cheating, and in the public eye. And the Dispatch has covered it repeatedly.

Republican members of the Ohio Redistricting Commission: (Top to bottom, right to left) Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, Secretary of State Frank LaRose, House Speaker Bob Cupp Auditor Keith Faber and Senate President Matt Huffman.

If we had taken all the passion, energy, protests and marches about abortion to the mapmakers, we would be having an entirely different conversation this morning.

Would you play Monopoly with someone who makes the rules and the number one rule is they get to start with 90% of the properties - and oh, they get 90% of the money, too?

You probably wouldn’t argue about the color of the dice, and you wouldn’t just say no. You’d say, "Hell no."

And you would tell everyone in earshot, "This guy's a crook. A cheater. A con man." You might even flip the table or punch the guy in the face.

Democracy is screwed until the maps get changed and that will take a multimillion-dollar referendum. The money is the easy part. Getting the Dems to agree on the problem and work together is the hard part.

We need to stop screaming about issues. Issues are symptoms of an underlying problem.

Help make free, fair elections work

Poll watchers and ballot inspectors look at absentee ballots.
Poll watchers and ballot inspectors look at absentee ballots.

I just finished a busy day processing voters for the Franklin County Board of Elections.

I work at a polling location in Gahanna and we had our first poll watcher. She was a lovely young woman, and I still don’t know what party she represented. That pleases me very much because she followed the rules and didn’t interfere with our work to process over 1,200 voters. She even helped us clean up at the end of the day.

Thank you. But the Board of Elections struggles to recruit and train enough poll workers to make election days run smoothly and keep waiting lines short.

If you care deeply about free and fair elections, why not help to make that happen? Poll watchers are there all day; so are the workers. It seems to me that you get a better view of integrity and fairness by participating in the process and understanding the procedures. I have to account for every ballot and tallies must be supported by records and documentation.

Nothing I can say will convince you that fraud and corruption is rare due to the rules and procedures of voting in Ohio. Come see for yourself. I, too, was skeptical after the 2016 election, so I volunteered to get a firsthand look at what was going on.

Letters::6 reasons Ohioans can trust elections are safe, secure

Don’t let people sway your opinion of elections by believing people who have no experience or firsthand knowledge say things that they “think” are true. Come a be part of the process so you can ensure that the things people are saying are not true.

I can only speak for Ohio. We have an election system that we can all feel proud of. But don’t take my word for it. Come see for yourself. I look forward to working with you on Election Day (next year).

'What about bad parenting?'

Banks get robbed because they have money. The bad guy is the villain.

It is not the bank, not the gun manufacturer, not the sunny day on which the crime is committed. Total responsibility is on the criminal. Banks have money. Duh.

City Attorney Zach Klein and Columbus City Council want to sue Hyundai and Kia (Nov. 9, "City seeks to sue Hyundai, Kia") because of the over 2,700 automobile thefts.

More:Car theft rise: Columbus City Council hires lawyers to sue Kia, Hyundai

Councilman Emmanuel Remy said the thefts are “easy” and for “thrills.” And while Hyundai Motor America has kits for purchase, Remy says it is “unbelievable” and wants the kits to be “free.” Of course, he does. He’s unbelievable. He also said the vehicles are products of “bad manufacturing.”

Emmanuel, what about bad parenting?

Instead of giving them “Kia Boys,” call them what they are: “Boys Who Steal Cars While Their Parents Look the Other Way.” Their parents know their kids are stealing vehicles. And, please, do not say that parents are too busy to know where their kids are, or who they hang with. I’m sick of that crap, always blaming someone else.

Interesting, too, Council skirts around what the law firm Allen, Stovall, Neuman & Ashton is really being paid. There’s more involved than a “percentage of a settlement.”

The next time a bank gets robbed, someone steals from Lowe’s, thugs beat up someone in an Easton parking lot, we can count of Klein and his Democratic band of Council to sue the businesses and the victims. After all, they are “easy” targets.
