Letters: Watching and waiting; Put an end to greyhound racing

Watching and waiting

Did you see where the former president, who once lied about his height to avoid being categorized as obese, slammed Chris Christie for being obese? Did you see the recent report noting that the infamous mobster, Al Capone, also called the federal investigation into his criminality a “witch hunt.”

Did you see that a grand jury in Georgia indicted the former president for leading a criminal organization that attempted to steal the election from Joe Biden? It used the racketeering (RICO) statute famously employed in the past to prosecute mobsters.

The former president has now been indicted four times. A jury found him liable for sexually abusing and defaming E. Jean Carroll. Yet his popularity among his supporters has skyrocketed. Do they think he’ll escape a guilty verdict in all four cases? Or doesn’t it matter? Instead, don’t they share and bask under the former president’s whining about his victimization? After all, what constitutes a grievance other than a tacit admission of being a loser victimized by a winner?

Me? I’m savoring the spectacle of four criminal trials and the further richly earned debasement of the former president. But, I’m also waiting in anticipation to see whether one of his severe personality disorders, logorrhea, gets him fined, first, and subsequently thrown into jail before any jury ever gets around to convicting him. Given that he just can’t stop talking, what will the MAGA deplorables do then?

Break out the popcorn!

Put an end to greyhound racing

This September, the House Committee on Agriculture will vote on an amendment to outlaw all gambling on greyhound racing nationwide. Even though greyhound racing is a dying industry, more than $400 million is still bet on dog races each year in our country. Further, as dog racing slowly dies in the United States, foreign dog tracks have begun appealing to American gamblers over the internet.

The animal protection community has fought greyhound racing for decades due to animal welfare concerns. Greyhounds endure lives of confinement at commercial tracks and many dogs suffer serious injuries. Due to these concerns, Pennsylvania outlawed greyhound racing nearly two decades ago.

The member of Congress who represents most of our community, Glenn “GT” Thompson, is the chair of the committee that will determine whether the amendment to end greyhound racing is approved. Congressman Thompson will have enormous influence over the fate of this legislation. The amendment will be identical to a bill named the Greyhound Protection Act (H.R. 3894) which has already been filed, available at www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/house-bill/3894.

Please email Congressman Thompson today urging him to support the Greyhound Protection Act Amendment as part of the Farm Bill. Your voice matters! You can submit your comment in support of the Greyhound Protection Act using this link: thompson.house.gov/contact/email-me
