The City of Levelland announced late Wednesday that it plans to plant 450 oak trees across the city as part of its Keep Levelland Beautiful program.

The trees -- 50 of which will be planted in the city farm, 150 across Levelland ISD campuses and the remainder given to residents to plant -- were donated by the Houston-based Apache Corporation.

“I am grateful and excited for the city of Levelland and KLB to have received three grants from the Apache Tree Grant Program Trees are such a vital part of a healthy environment," said Josh Meredith, chairperson for the Keep Levelland Beautiful Advisory Board. "They're good for the bees, the air, the soil, and the people! These trees will help keep Levelland beautiful today, tomorrow and for future generations.”

The remaining 250 trees will be given to the community on Oct. 18 between 4 and 6:30 p.m. for free, with a two-per-car limit. Residents can pick the five-gallon cedar elm trees at the Civic Center at 1902 McKinley Street with proof of ID displaying a 79336 zip code.

According to A-J archives, Apache started the Apache Tree Grant Program in 2005 and has since donated millions of trees to nonprofit organizations in states across the country, including previous donations to the city of Levelland.
