Levis leads Sharpsville past Reynolds, 21-7; Farrell rolls past KC; Eagles, Hornets, Hounds, Rockets, Tigers, Trojans capture wins

Oct. 23—TRANSFER — It was Reynolds High's "Senior Night," but it served as a homecoming for the Levis family.

"They're always good memories here — always. I've still got a little Blue and Gray in me," admitted Sharpsville assistant football coach Doug Levis.

Levis' son, Garen, caught a 39-yard touchdown pass, one of three 2nd-half Sharpsville scores as the Blue Devils defeated Reynolds, 21-7, in a Region 1 regular-season finale.

It was Sharpsville's 3rd consecutive conquest. But owing to its cooperative agreement with West Middlesex, the Blue Devils do not qualify for the postseason.

Sharpsville (4-2, 6-3) snapped a scoreless stalemate at intermission as Ian Smith and Chris Roth ran 19 and 27 yards, respectively, for TDs and Levis and Caullin Summers collaborated on their TD toss after the host Raiders had drawn within 14-7 with 6:48 remaining.

Doug Levis quarterbacked Reynolds to back-to-back District 10 Division II championships (1986-87). Not coincidently, Levis' coach, Mercer County Hall-of-Famer Frank Amato, was watching Friday night's game from Reynolds' sideline.

After being blanked for 3 quarters, Garen Levis latched onto Summers' 3rd-and-12 pass for a drive-sustaining 22-yard gain, then the insurance score from 39 yards out with 5:35 left.

"That 'toe-tap' on the sideline was big, and then on the very next play we ran "red skin-and-go, it's kind've an 'out route,' then just 'wheel' up the sideline, and Summers hit me. I thank Summers for that," Garen Levis said.

Summers and Levis connected for their 8th TD of the season, half of which occurred against defending District 10 Class 2A kingpin Wilmington.

"We've been together for a long time now, and he's just been the best quarterback that I could have," Garen Levis said in praise of Summers. "He and I had been workin' out all summer."

Despite denting the Blue Devils' Red Zone, Reynolds (3-3, 4-4) could cash in just once. Trailing 14-0, quarterback Brayden McCloskey connected with Haydin McLaughlin on a 48-yard TD on a deep post pattern. However it was one of just 2 Raiders' pass completions.

The Raiders' run game was led by Jalen Wagner, who went for a game-high 131 yards including 54- and 38-yard 1st-half sprints.

"That's a great football team over there. They're very well coached. They were well prepared for us," Reynolds Head Coach Josh Mull said in praise of Sharpsville. "They shut down our running game, made us do some different things.

"I think we battled well," Mull continued. "All year long, I don't feel as though we played a full game. (Friday) night I think we did that. A couple things here or there, it's a different score."

The 1st half ended with Reynolds situated on Sharpsville's 9-yard line; however the Raiders were without any remaining times-out and could not align for a potential field goal as time expired. That was one of 4 times Reynolds' possessions ended by failing to convert 4th-down situations.

Nonetheless, Mull said his Raiders are ready for the postseason. He said there is no inherent pressure on his reigning District 10 Class 1A champions in spite of opponents perhaps targeting this year's edition.

"No. This is a great region with a whole bunch of great teams," Mull mused. "I think it's going to prepare us a whole lot better for goin' into the playoffs. Nothing against the teams up north, but we're playin' really tough competition.

"We're four-and-four. There's a team that's six-and-oh (Northwestern). I don't know if he's six-and-oh if he's playin' in our region, I really don't.

"But the bottom line is, wherever we are next week, wherever (the District 10 committee) tells us we need to be, we go there, we take care of it and we'll play some good football. I think we're right where we need to be, I really do.

"Whomever (the D-10 committee) sends us to play, we have to play exactly the way we played (Friday) night because they're not gonna be that good (as Region 1 teams)."

After praising Sharpsville skipper Paul Piccirilli and the Blue Devils' other assistants, Doug Levis admitted, "It's nice watchin' Garen, it is. But it was fun winning here, too. A little bit of both," he said with a smile.

Grinning, Garen Levis allowed that his father reflects back on his high school playing days from time to time.

"Yeah, he talks about it all the time. It's pretty cool that he played on this field I'm playin' on right now. It's pretty special to me," the younger Levis admitted.

Notes: Clayton Rhoades picked off a pass for Reynolds, and McCloskey and Jon Crumbacher recorded sacks.
