5. Red Cross plans blood drives as critical holiday week approaches

American Red Cross is planning a series of local blood drives as Independence Day approaches.

The agency says it sees about a 21% decline in blood and platelet donations during holiday weeks, including Independence Day.

When blood donations drop, so does the blood supply, making it challenging to ensure blood is available when hospitals need it, the Red Cross said.

Here are the local blood drives that are planned:

  • June 29, noon-5 p.m. at Ladewig Zinkgraf American Legion Post 243, 40 S. Stafford St., Plymouth;

  • July 7, 11:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, N5990 Country Aire Road, Plymouth;

  • July 8, 15 and 22, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at Sheboygan Trades and Labor Hall, 1104 Wisconsin Ave., Sheboygan; and

  • July 20, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at Berkshire Community Gym, 101 School St., Sheboygan Falls.

Those who give June 30-July 10 will receive a Red Cross recycled cotton tote bag, while supplies last.

To schedule an appointment, download the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
