ROMEOVILLE, IL — Staff with the Lewis University College of Nursing and Health Sciences gave several boxes of masks, gloves and patient gowns to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox on Monday, as the number of coronavirus cases continued to grow. Some studies indicate that hospital staff are at increased risk for infection during an viral outbreak, and a lack of proper sanitary gear doesn't help.

The donation was announced on Lewis University's Facebook page, along with a picture showing campus police loading up the gear for delivery to Silver Cross. While the items were donated from the college's stock, it was the campus police who made the physical delivery.

"Yesterday afternoon Sgt. Tom and Ofc. Hugo loaded personal protective equipment (gloves, masks and gowns) donated by the Lewis University College of Nursing and Health Professions which LUPD delivered to Silver Cross Hospital to help keep our community health care workers safe," text accompanying the post read. "We're in this together!"

According to Dr. Christopher Sindt, Lewis University's Provost, the request for the sanitary gear came from Silver Cross itself. In total, about 20 kits of personal protective equipment were delivered, plus a few extra boxes of gloves.

"The request came from Silver Cross directly – I think they reached out to local colleges and universities with nursing programs –and our Nursing Department was happy to help to contribute to our community’s response to this global health crisis," Dr. Sindt said via email.

Patch also reached out to Silver Cross for comment on this story, but has yet to receive a response.
