Lexington baseball captures second SC Diamond Invitational championship
Lexington baseball won its first SC Diamond Invitational in more than a decade on Saturday.
The Wildcats defeated host Blythewood, 7-3, to win the SCDI for the second time. Lexington’s other title game in 2012.
The Bengals were going for their third straight tournament championship.
South Carolina commit Brandon Cromer hit a two-run homer and Brayden Jeffcoat had three hits and two RBI for the Wildcats. Jeffcoat had big three-run home run in Friday’s win over Class 2A No. 1 team Oceanside Collegiate.
Tyler Floyd added two hits and earned tournament MVP honors. The College of Charleston signee was 7-for-14 in the tournament and also pitched two innings of scoreless relief in the four-day event.
Lexington jumped out to a 2-0 lead on Cromer’s two-run homer in the first. The Wildcats added four more in the third to lead 6-0. Landon Knight, Jeffcoat and Will Burgess all had RBI in the inning.
Cromer picked up the win for the Wildcats.
Landon Penfield, Alex Myers and John Rollings each had RBI for Blythewood.
Lexington plays Charlotte Christian on Wednesday before finishing up the regular season the following week with a three-game series against Dutch Fork. The Wildcats are still alive for the Region 4-5A championship.
Blythewood plays Rock Hill in a three-game series beginning on Monday.
