New-to-Lexington fried chicken chain opening first location. Details on where, when.
A new bird is about to land in Lexington.
Slim Chickens, an Arkansas-based restaurant chain, is opening its first Lexington location.
The Slim Chickens at 525 Waller Ave., across from St. Joseph Hospital and near several hotels on Broadway, will open Monday June 19.
A second Slim Chickens location is coming to Richmond Road, alongside a 7 Brew coffee kiosk, where the O’Charley’s was recently torn down.
Slim Chickens is a fast-casual “better chicken” restaurant with dine-in and drive-thru service. And there are lots of big fans known as “Slimthusiasts,” according to the company.
The chicken is always fresh, is marinated in buttermilk and hand-breaded after you order it, according to the company, which has more than 200 locations across the country including six more in Kentucky.
Slim Chickens menu
The Slim Chickens menu includes sandwiches, chicken tenders and wings with your choice of 17 house-made dipping sauces (including gravy) plus salads, chicken and waffles and side items, including fried pickles, fried mushrooms and fried okra.
There’s also a rotating lineup of desserts in jars, fried pies and cookies.
The Waller Avenue location will create more than 100 new jobs, according to owner Houchens Food Group.
Houchens Food Group is a subsidiary of Houchens Industries, a 105-year-old company that is one of the nation’s largest 100% employee-owned companies. Houchens’ portfolio includes grocery, convenience stores, construction and multiple franchise brands. Houchens Food Group is currently operating over 50 restaurants with seven different brands.
They own two Slim Chickens locations in Bowling Green and three in Tennessee.
