Expect lines outside The Party Store Marathon gas station in downtown Lexington June 6, as motorists will get a break on gas prices.

Starting at 10 a.m., drivers can get $1 off per gallon of gas up to 25 gallons.

In total, 6,000 gallons of gas are available thanks to one small business owner.

Tim Hering, owner of Lakeshore Graphics saw the need in his community when he overheard a couple in the local market deciding whether to purchase grocery items or gas, according to a press release. Hering  offered to buy their gas, but afterwards started to think bigger. He created “People Helping People.”

“I wanted to inspire other people,” Hering said in a statement. “If a guy who owns a T-shirt shop can help a community, then they can make a positive impact, too.”

Hering coordinated a campaign to ask other local small business owners to contribute $250. The original plan was to ask 12 people and raise $3,000. Within 18 hours, $5,000 had been donated.

“The response was really amazing. I am very proud of our community,” he said.

As of Monday night, $6,000 has been raised.

Hering hopes the event at the station, 5621 Main St., will keep people in the small resort town.

“I hope it is really busy and that people use this opportunity. I also hope it inspires others," he said.
