Lexington Opera House cancels second show; balcony repairs could take 3 weeks

The Lexington Opera House has canceled a second show due to structural problems inside the theater.

The venue has said that cracks were discovered in drywall and that the upper balcony would be closed for renovations.

On Friday, the Mary Chapin Carpenter concert scheduled for Aug. 12 was canceled, according to an announcement.

Tickets for the concert will be refunded from point of purchase, which could take up to 30 days, according to the venue.

However, the Trae Crowder show, which was abruptly canceled last weekend, has been rescheduled. Crowder will return to Lexington on Sept. 29. All previous tickets will be honored, according to the venue, and some tickets are still available.

The Crowder show was called off Saturday after the opera house discovered the cracks. According to Brown+Kubican Structural Engineers, who were hired to inspect the venue, the top balcony should not be used.

“Based on our observations and review of the existing balcony structure, it is our opinion that the Opera House is safe for occupancy and able to host shows or concerts. To minimize risk to the guest, performer and facility, it is our recommendation that only the balcony should not be occupied until the balcony ceiling is more properly secured. There is no risk when the balcony is not occupied,” Brown+Kubican Structural Engineers said Wednesday after completing their review of the venue.

The upcoming Lexington Theatre Company’s performance of “Memphis” from Aug. 3-6 will continue as planned with seating in the first two levels only. The top balcony will be closed for these performances.

Repairs could take up to three weeks, according to the Lexington Opera House.
