Lexington student’s mom says she wants proof her son assaulted a school police officer

The mother of a Henry Clay High School student confronted the Fayette County School Board Monday evening about accusations against her son after a fight at the school Friday.

Natasha Sanford spoke Monday during a Fayette County School Board meeting, telling the board she wants to review video of the incident because her son is facing charges of assaulting a police officer. She wants to see if that actually happened before officials “charge her son with something he did not do.”

“My son was sprayed several times with mace and thrown across a cafeteria table by an officer,” she said.

She said she wasn’t given an explanation. Three people were charged after the fight at Henry Clay High School which ended with school police using pepper spray, Fayette County Public Schools officials said previously.

FCPS said the altercation involved two female students, both of whom were arrested by the Lexington Police Department after the fight.

At least one male was also involved, according to the school district.

The Henry Clay school resource officer tried to break up the fight “but determined pepper spray was needed to bring the incident to an end,” FCPS spokesperson Dia Davidson-Smith had said.

Sanford said that as a parent and a taxpayer, her son is supposed to feel safe at school and she’s supposed to have an explanation of what took place.

She wants to meet with the officer, the principal and Superintendent Demetrus Liggins.

School board members did not immediately comment at Monday’s meeting.
