LHER offering several summer camps for drones and more

Registration is open for the Laurel Highlands Education and Robotics Inc. 2023 summer camps. LHER is offering more options than ever before, with summer camps geared toward both beginners and experienced veterans. Participants can join the fun of engaging in hands-on activities while learning new skills.

Drone Camps

  • Classic Drone Camp (8 years old and up) — In this fun-filled two hour Drone Boot Camp, students will learn to fly, race, and complete challenges including obstacle avoidance and a light-changing beacon game. No prior experience is needed and drones are provided for students to use during the camp.

  • Advanced Piloting (12 years old and up) — In this three day camp, students will have the thrilling, immersive experience of piloting an FPV (First Person View) drone and simulating the experience of flying. While attending six hours of training (split into three days of two hour sessions), students will learn to operate and maintain FPV drones, fly with FPV goggles and a simulator, navigate courses, avoid obstacles, do tricks, understand drone safety and line of sight flying, fly in Acro mode, Betaflight, and more.

Coding Camps...with Drones!

  • Beginner Programming with Blockly (8 years old and up) — In this fun-filled two hour introduction to programming, students will see their code take flight by programming drones. Students will explore graphical programming with Blockly coupled with flying fun. Students may attend one camp session or sign up for multiple sessions to explore and surmount additional challenges and expand their coding skills.

  • Intermediate Programming (12 years old and up) — In this three day camp (split into three days of two hour sessions), students will learn the foundations of script-based Python programming while using code to pilot drones, control LEDs, detect and avoid obstacles, map space, use sensors, and more. Understanding how to code functions and variables comes alive when coupled with the excitement of maneuvering a drone or making it flip.

Engineering Build Camp

  • Engineering Build Camp (12 years old and up) — Explore the engineering design and build process through LHER’s Engineering Build Camp. While attending six hours of hands-on activities (split into three days of two hour sessions), students will build a drivable robot chassis from start to finish. Going from a pile of nuts, bolts and materials, each student will build, wire and ultimately drive a completed robot. Students will conclude the camp by having the opportunity to test and drive up to five different styles of drivetrains built by camp attendees, experience the differences, and assess the pros, cons, and best usage of each.

Tele-Op Driving Camps

  • Tele-Op Driving Camps (12 years old and up) — Come test and develop your driving skills while having fun. In this fun-filled two hour Tele-op Driving Camp, students will discover what it takes to control a robot in both fast and precise challenges. Students will develop robot driver skills as they progress from basic driving techniques to navigating obstacles, maneuvering through timed events, and mastering increasingly difficult challenges. By driving up to five different chassis designs, students will explore the skills needed to drive each robot on various surfaces and discover the strengths and weaknesses of each design.
