Liam Payne has opened up on some of the issues he's faced during fatherhood.

The former One Direction star and pop icon Cheryl share a 2-year-old son named Bear, although the couple are no longer together after splitting up last year.

In conversation with The Guardian, Payne admitted that because of Cheryl's closeness to their baby boy, he found it difficult to establish a relationship with Bear himself.

"I built it up so much in my head. Finding your feet in that relationship between child and father – it's difficult," the star explained.

"Cheryl was always really glued to Bear, so for me, I was like, 'What's my role in this? If I cook and look after her, then in turn I'm looking after him' – that made sense to me."

Although Payne is regularly away from his son due to musical and media commitments, the 26-year-old embraces the use of technology to keep in touch.

"He's good at using the phone and FaceTime," he said of Bear.
