Liberty boys, Frontier girls win Kern Invitational
Mar. 9—It's still early in the track and field season, but several area athletes showcased their talents with strong performances in the Kern Invitational on Thursday at Liberty.
The host Patriots won the boys event, with Frontier's girls finishing first.
Senior Ethan Mahanke led Liberty with victories in four events, winning both the 200 (21.88) and 400 (49.65) and helping his team finish first in both the 400 (43.24) and 1600 relays (3:26.23).
His teammate, senior Ermiah Harrison, won the 100 (11.04) and was runner-up in the 200 (22.62) before helping the Patriots finish ahead of the back in both relays.
Christian Edwards also had a big day, winning the long jump (21-11), finishing second in the 100 (11.11) and running the second leg on the first-place 1600 relay.
In the girls action, the Titans dominated the sprints, with senior Natalia Carrillo winning the 100 (12.45), 200 (26.33) and running the second leg on the first-place 400 relay team (48.87).
Avianna Carrillo was second in the 100 (12.47) and ran lead-off on the winning 400 relay team.
The Patriots girls squad also had impressive performances. Bella Turner won both the 100 (15.54) and 300 (45.76) hurdles, and ran the second leg on her team's winning 1600 relay team (4:10.30).
Emma Fredrick won the high jump (5-4) and triple jump (36-5.75) with personal-best marks, and was second in the long jump just days after finishing up her basketball team was eliminated in the Southern California Regional Division III semifinals.
Nicole Bridges won the 800 (2:24.08) and ran lead-off for the Patriots' winning 1600 relay team. She was also second in the 1600 (5:18.34).
Kayleen Faith Maes of Kennedy won both throwing events, sweeping the shot put (30-2) and discus (97-2), both season bests.
