Liberty Square development brings 74 new affordable housing units to midtown Stockton

The Liberty Square housing development opened in midtown Stockton on Thursday, providing 74 new affordable units for low-income families and veterans.

“Liberty Square has brought life to a long-vacant commercial building, while improving the infrastructure within this midtown Stockton neighborhood,” Carol Ornelas, CEO of developer Visionary Home Builders of California Inc., said in a statement.

Mayor Kevin Lincoln, state Sen. Susan Talamantes Eggman, City Manager Harry Black and partners on the project attended Liberty Square's grand opening at 807 N. San Joaquin St. on Thursday afternoon.

Families that earn 30% to 60% of the median local income are eligible to apply for units at Liberty Square, and there is a "focus on veteran residents," according to a release by Visionary Home Builders.

All 74 units have already been occupied and there is a wait list for prospective new residents.

The building includes one, two and three-bedroom apartments and studios, the release stated. Amenities include a laundry facility, a day care center, a community space with a computer lab, and a teen center, the release said.

Liberty Square includes social service office space and is located near existing social service offices, as well as local bus stops, the release said.

The building renovated to become Liberty Square was a vacant commercial property that once housed Starting Out adult day care, and other businesses.

Work began on the project in May 2020, with a first phase completed in December and a second phase completed in January.
