Library introduces new Interim Director, moves challenged materials

Jan. 11—THOMASVILLE- The Thomas County Public Library Board met on Monday afternoon, where new Interim Director Stephen Whigham was introduced and an update on the reconsideration of materials was provided.

Whigham has been involved with libraries throughout the state for approximately 40 years. He holds a Masters in Library Science and strongly believes libraries are one of the "greatest institutions in our society."

Whigham said libraries serve everyone and should be open to anyone in the community who is in need of information.

"My friend refers to the library as an oasis, which I believe is a pretty good term to describe it," he said.

Prior to arriving in Thomasville, Whigham said he knew about the staff, as the State Library Director, Julie Walker spoke highly of them.

"That's quite a compliment to the staff and to the people of Thomasville," Whigham said.

Since arriving, Whigham has immersed himself in the daily activities happening at the Library, including the ongoing reconsideration of materials.

"I arrived here December 12, and am very aware of the situation that has gone on," Whigham said. "The staff members and board members have both been very helpful, and I've met with people on both sides of the issue."

Upon reviewing the issues at hand, Whigham announced three books, Me, Earl and the Dying Girl, Dahmer, and What is a Girl? What is a Boy? have all been moved to the adult section.

Me, Earl and the Dying Girl was originally proposed to be left in its current section, but upon Whigham's arrival, underwent an appeals process and was reviewed by the Materials Selection Committee.

The Committee was in agreement the book could be moved to the adult section.

Whigham explained some of these books were originally found in the YA section, which is often refereed to as the most difficult cohort for libraries to find materials and programming for.

"A lot of these books are categorized for those 16 and older and could go either way," Whigham said. "So, we agreed all of those books could go to the adult section."

Whigham said he is aware there could be other books that eventually come to his attention, but at this time all books that were brought before the Materials Selection Committee have been decided on.

"We are all patrons of this library, including myself, so if you ever have a concern, please come talk to me," he reminded the crowd.

Whigham also explained to the audience he has no intention of becoming the full-time director and asked for a motion to post the Director position on the Georgia Public Library Service page.

Those interested must have a Masters in Library Science, be able to provide three professional references, a cover letter and resume.

No walk-in applications will be accepted by Whigham or other staff members.

Concluding his Interim Director introduction and report, he turned over the microphone to members of the public, who would like to speak.

Five individuals spoke, regarding sexually explicit material available to minors.

Speakers provided alternative solutions such as, providing warning labels on books or allowing the parent to be notified when a child checks out a mature book on the Pines Library catalog.

Whigham thanked those who spoke for their suggestions, before Chairwoman Adrian Burns adjourned the meeting.
