Library Lines: Celebrate Christmas in Cheboygan

Celebrate a Night of Christmas Magic at the Library! Bring your friends and family to the Cheboygan Area Public Library for an afternoon of winter merriment 2-4 p.m. Dec. 4 as part of the traditional Night of Christmas Magic! Ho, Ho, Ho, what fun! Traditionally, this Christmas event has coincided with a visit from Santa, but as Santa is extremely busy this year a couple of reindeer will be coming instead.

So, we will be kicking off the evening by meeting real-life reindeer. Antler Ridge Farms from Williamsburg, will be sharing two members of their beautiful herd with our community. Everyone who comes will be able to visit with the reindeer at the library from 2-4 p.m.

Also, a part of the evening’s fun is the Friends of the Library’s annual Gift of Reading book giveaway to the community’s youth. Each child (teens, too!) that comes to the event may pick out a book to keep.

The Friends of the Library have supported the Gift of Reading project for many years with funds they raise through their book sales in their Book Nook bookstore located on the lower level of the Library, as well as other fundraisers. The Book Nook is open on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m. and is run by Friends volunteers. All monies raised support Library programs and projects like the Gift of Reading.

The Friends of the Library could always use your support with children’s book donations. There is a donation box in the main Library near the circulation desk if anyone would like to donate new or like-new books to give at Gift of Reading events. There will also be a donation jar if you would like to financially support the purchase of books through the Friends for this project. Any assistance is greatly appreciated!

The Cheboygan Area Public Library will be hosting a program featuring a virtual visit from Chris Edwards, retired TV meteorologist and present Climate Change Specialist for the city of Detroit on Monday, Dec. 5 at 6 p.m. His program titled, "Climate Change as of 2022: Simple, Serious, Solvable," will be a fact-based look at the scientific state of the issues and impacts involved in climate change, localized in many ways to Michigan. He will also explore a range of ideas to address the significant challenges we face, including what each of us can do.

The virtual visit with Chris Edwards will be viewable Live at the Cheboygan Library as well as remotely via Zoom. If community members wish to view the program remotely, they can use the meeting ID 891 8031 8129 and the passcode 827362 to join the event on Zoom. The program zoom link is also available on the Cheboygan Library’s Calendar of Events, accessible on the library’s website cheboyganlibrary.org. When viewing the calendar of events, click on the event listing and a pop-up window will have event information and a Zoom like to click on to join the program.

As for Chris Edwards’ background, he began his career as a forecaster in the U.S. Air Force and later became one of the first meteorologists with The Weather Channel in Atlanta, before moving on to forecast at WISN-TV in Milwaukee, and KYW-TV in Philadelphia. He began carefully studying and reporting on "global warming" in 1987.

Edwards was also the chief meteorologist at WJBK-TV/FOX2 Detroit before leaving in 2004 to spend more time with his family and to start his own business teaching weather science. In 2011, he joined WXYZ-TV as a multi-media meteorologist, where he worked until December 2018.

He was honored with three Emmy awards, for environmental reporting and weathercasting, as well as recognition from the Michigan Chapter of the National Association of Television Arts and Sciences for Best Weathercast in 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004.

Now, as a retired TV meteorologist, he works part-time work at the University of Michigan, where he recently collaborated with Professor Richard Rood to produce a video on climate change, and also serves as the Climate Change Specialist for the city of Detroit.

Chris Edwards’ "Climate Change as of 2022: Simple, Serious, Solvable"program is free and open to the community.

Please note, the Cheboygan Area Public Library will be closing at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 23, and will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 24, to observe the Thanksgiving holiday.
