Library Lines: Get in the Christmas spirit in Cheboygan

The Cheboygan Area Public Library and the Friends of the Library will be hosting a "Night of Christmas Magic” featuring two live reindeer and the Gift of Reading from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4. The library’s special guests will be visiting from Antler Ridge Farms from Williamsburg, Michigan! This event is free and open to the community.

The Friends of the Library’s annual Gift of Reading book give-away to the community’s youth will take place at this time. Each child (teens too!) that comes to the event may pick out a book to keep.

The Friends of the Library have supported the Gift of Reading project for many years with funds they raise through their book sales in their Book Nook bookstore located on the lower level of the Library, as well as other fundraisers. The Book Nook is open on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is run by Friends volunteers. All monies raised support library programs and projects like the Gift of Reading.

The Friends of the Library could always use your support with children’s book donations. There is a donation box in the main library near the circulation desk if anyone would like to donate new or like-new books to give at Gift of Reading events. There will also be a donation jar if you would like to financially support the purchase of books through the Friends for this project. Any assistance is greatly appreciated!

Retired TV meteorologist Chris Edwards will present "Climate Change as of 2022: Simple, Serious, Solvable," live via zoom at 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 5. The live program will be viewable at the Cheboygan Area Public Library as well as on Zoom. The program is free and open to the community.

If community members wish to view the program remotely, they can use the meeting ID 891 8031 8129 and the passcode 827362 to join the event on Zoom. The program zoom link is also available on the Cheboygan Library’s Calendar of Events, accessible on the library’s website, cheboyganlibrary.org. When viewing the calendar of events, click on the event listing and a pop-up window will have event information and a Zoom like to click on to join the program.

Chris Edwards will share a fact-based look at the scientific state of the issues and impacts involved in climate change, localized in many ways to Michigan. He will also explore a range of ideas to address the significant challenges we face, including what each of us can do.

Chrisbegan his career as a forecaster in the U.S. Air Force and later became one of the first meteorologists with The Weather Channel in Atlanta. He has been honored with three Emmy awards for environmental reporting and weather casting and has received recognition from the Michigan Chapter of the National Association of Television Arts and Sciences for Best Weathercast five times.

Now, as a retired TV meteorologist, he works part-time at the University of Michigan, where he recently collaborated with Professor Richard Rood to produce a video on climate change, and also serves as the climate change specialist for the city of Detroit.

Looking ahead, the Cheboygan Area Public Library will also be hosting a Polar Express Pajama Party at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16. The library will show the 2004 animated “Polar Express” movie featuring the voice talent of Tom Hanks and directed by Robert Zemeckis. The film is rated G and runs 1 hour and 40 minutes. The library will provide snacks and drinks and a few extra treats for those who attend. The event is free and open to all ages, and of course, pajamas are encouraged. Participants are also welcome to bring a pillow and/or blanket if they wish to be extra comfy during the movie. Please note, the main library will be closed during the film (library hours for Friday are 8 a.m.-5 p.m.). Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. for movie-goers.
